Avoid AC Frustration with Three Tips

We get some serious mileage from our air conditioners every year. This is the cost of living in Louisiana, and with our beautiful weather and access to delicious crawfish, it’s worth every penny!

Though sometimes homeowners deal with a little more than just a “struggling” AC. Your AC could start making strange noises, providing subpar comfort, or just start breaking down. If this sounds more like your life, then we urge you to call us for AC repair in Kenner, LA. We’ll get your system back on track.

In the meantime, we’ve got three specific things that you can do for your air conditioner that will help alleviate problems and keep it in good shape. While you might have heard of a couple of these tips before, they’re worth learning about so you can stay vigilant for AC problems down the line. Let’s get started to avoid frustration with your AC!

Tip #1: Replace Your Air Filter Regularly

Air filters are integral components of your air conditioning system. Every AC unit has an air filter located in the return air ducts where air is supposed to be inhaled by your system. This is meant to protect the sensitive interior components of your system, and it can get clogged up pretty regularly.

The more vigilant you are, the better condition your air conditioner will be kept in. We recommend replacing the air filter every 1-3 years to keep it clear and allow maximum airflow into the unit.

Some problems associated with a clogged air filter are as follows:

  • Poor energy efficiency.
  • Low comfort levels and poor airflow.
  • Overheating air conditioner and abrupt shutdowns.
  • Poor air quality.
  • Ice is forming on the coils.

Keep replacing your air filter so that none of these issues plague your system.

Tip #2: Keep Temperatures Higher

This might sound like a strange tip to give but bear with us. Running your air conditioner to meet temperatures at 65° and below when it’s scorchingly hot outside can be a recipe for disaster. Your AC can only realistically reach a temperature about 20° below the outdoor temperature without starting to struggle.

First of all, even if you set your AC 30° below the outdoor temperature, it most likely will never reach your desired comfort level. Instead, it will run day and night to get as close as possible, consuming too much energy and wearing down the components of the system.

Tip #3: Invest in a New Thermostat

This might seem like it doesn’t have anything to do with your air conditioner, but it absolutely does! A new thermostat, like a smart thermostat, can learn your comfort habits and curb energy loss in very meaningful ways. It will automatically lower the burden on your AC during the night when things are cooler, and it will learn to run at a lower capacity when you aren’t home.

You might even consider upgrading to a Wi-Fi thermostat so you can control your AC from anywhere in your house, and even while you’re at work! All of these small changes improve the system’s efficiency and avoid repairs down the line.
